IRA J. KURZBAN, ESQ.
J.D. and M.A., University of California,
Berkeley. Mr. Kurzban is a partner in the law firm of Kurzban,
Kurzban, Weinger, Tetzeli & Pratt, P.A., of Miami, Florida. He is a
past-national President and former General Counsel of the American Immigration
Lawyers Association. For over thirty-five years Mr. Kurzban has
represented Haitian refugees in the United States bringing their cases to the
United States Supreme Court on several occasions including Jean v. Nelson, and Haitian
Refugee Center v. McNary.
In 1991 he was asked to represent the first democratically elected Haitian government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Mr. Kurzban represented the Haitian governments of Presidents Aristide and Prevail for the next 13 years until the second coup against President Aristide in 2004. Since 2004 Mr. Kurzban has been the Chairperson of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and the Partnership for Education, Democracy and Health in Haiti, two organizations promoting human, social, economic and political rights in Haiti.
